Soft on the Heart / Soft on the Soul
Needle felting is an art form that uses a barbed needle to bind wool fibers together in such a way that it creates a solid piece of material.
There are different techniques and many variations on how to work with wool. Furever Heartfelt creates 2D and 3D portraits as well as standing and hanging sculptures.
There are many types of wool, all with different qualities. Colored wool is used to add detail to the outside of the sculpture to bring it to life.
Different colors are used to create patterns that replicate the actual model.
The barbed needle is incredibly sharp and comes in varying sizes that is used at different stages of the felting process. A foam block is used as the felting surface which helps to alleviate the accidental and inevitable stabbing into skin or fingers.
Roving is wool that has been run through a carding machine so that the fibers will start off in the same direction. It's often used to form the base of the sculpture.
Making the base takes a lot of time and poking! Once it’s at a solid state, details are added and sculpted one strand of wool at a time!
The eyes and noses are carefully created after studying a photo of the furry model. There's always a moment when the eyes are integrated into the sculptures little head, that it's as if he/she comes to life and says “hello”.
Finishing touches are added to each piece.
Take a minute to watch how Lily comes to life in this short video.
Enjoy!
